In a remarkable and encouraging shift, the Bougainville Women’s Federation (BWF) has recorded an unexpected yet inspiring development during its ongoing merchandise launch and group registration drive.
For the first time, a growing number of men are not only enquiring about BWF registration processes but are actively stepping forward to register women’s groups on behalf of the women in their communities.
This rare experience has been described by BWF President as a “powerful sign of changing attitudes” and a reflection of increasing support and recognition of the vital role women play in Bougainville’s development.
“This year is different,” she noted. “We are seeing men take initiative coming forward, asking questions, and supporting women to organize themselves. It is something we have not seen at this level before.”
This shift signals a growing sense of shared responsibility and partnership between men and women in advancing community development, peacebuilding, and leadership.
The 2026 BWF merchandise launch and registration drive, running from March 24th to April 30th, 2026, is aimed at strengthening grassroots women’s networks, increasing visibility, and ensuring inclusive participation—including women with disabilities and marginalized groups.
The involvement of men is now adding a new dimension to this initiative. Community leaders have welcomed this trend, noting that sustainable development in Bougainville depends on collaboration between both men and women.
“This is the Bougainville we want to see,” “Men standing alongside women, not behind or ahead—but together.”
As Bougainville continues its journey toward greater self-determination and long-term development, this emerging support from men represents a hopeful step forward—one that reinforces unity, respect, and collective progress.
The Bougainville Women’s Federation has acknowledged this positive change and encourages continued support from all members of the community to ensure that women’s voices remain strong, visible, and influential across the region
