The Bougainville Women’s Federation (BWF), with support from the Abt Bougainville Partnership, the Office of the Bougainville Electoral Commission, and the Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) Department of Community Development, will conduct the re-election and induction of its Central and South Bougainville Regional Executives from 9–12 June 2026.

The activity forms part of BWF’s ongoing commitment to strengthening women’s leadership, participation, peacebuilding, governance, and community development throughout Bougainville.

As Bougainville continues to advance discussions on governance, development priorities, and independence readiness, strong, accountable, and representative women’s leadership structures remain essential to ensuring women’s voices are included in decision-making processes at all levels.

The re-election process has become necessary following the limited effectiveness of the current leadership term since 2025. The exercise will provide an opportunity to renew leadership mandates through a transparent, democratic, and inclusive process while strengthening regional representation across Central and South Bougainville.

Importantly, the re-election will enable women leaders, youth representatives, and women with disabilities to actively participate in leadership and decision-making processes, ensuring that the federation remains inclusive and responsive to the needs of all women in Bougainville.

The re-election for the Central Bougainville Regional Executives will be conducted on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, and will be followed by an induction workshop on Wednesday, 10 June 2026. The South Bougainville Regional Executives’ re-election and induction will take place on Thursday, 11 June, and Friday, 12 June 2026, respectively.

Following the elections, newly elected executives will participate in an induction workshop designed to strengthen their understanding of governance systems, leadership responsibilities, communication structures, accountability mechanisms, and the strategic priorities of the federation.

The induction workshop will equip regional executives with the knowledge and skills required to effectively coordinate women’s development initiatives, advocate on issues affecting women and communities, and provide strong leadership within their respective regions.

BWF President and leadership have acknowledged the continued support of its partners and stakeholders in strengthening women’s leadership structures and ensuring that women remain active contributors to Bougainville’s development and future aspirations.

The re-election and induction program is expected to further strengthen the institutional capacity of the federation and reinforce its role as the leading umbrella organization representing women across Bougainville.
