The Bougainville Women’s Federation (BWF) has reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for greater support and recognition of Bougainville Youth in Agriculture, recognizing their vital contribution to the region’s agricultural economy and sustainable development through their initiatives.

The pledge was made by BWF Vice President, Ms. Hellen Siumana, during the Bougainville Youth in Agriculture Open Day held at Kahule Village, Tonsu Constituency, Buka, North Bougainville on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The open day brought together stakeholders and development partners, BYIA project communities and youth civil society organizations from Pororan, Taiof Island, Rauvira, and Papasa, providing them with an opportunity to showcase nutrient-rich and climate-resilient crops cultivated through the Bougainville Youth in Agriculture initiative. The event also highlighted the achievements of civil society organization groups and the practical knowledge and skills they have acquired through a series training.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Siumana commended the dedication and innovation demonstrated by the participating project communities, acknowledging their significant role in strengthening food security, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and building resilience to the impacts of climate change.

“We want to see youth-led agricultural businesses thriving from Buka to Buin, and we fully support the Bougainville Youth in Agriculture initiative and the positive impact it is making across Bougainville,” she said.

Ms. Siumana encouraged young people to embrace agriculture as a viable and rewarding profession with the potential to drive economic growth and create sustainable livelihoods.

“Agriculture should not be viewed as a fallback option. It is a profession that requires innovation, knowledge, and commitment. Our young people have the potential to become leaders in transforming Bougainville’s agricultural sector and ensuring food security for future generations,” she said.

She also expressed her appreciation to Bougainville Youth in Agriculture, Plan International, and the Australian Government through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) for their continued commitment and support in empowering young people through agricultural development initiatives in Bougainville.

The event was also supported and witnessed by Kokonas Indastri Koporesen (KIK), the Office of the North Bougainville Women’s Representative and the Office of the Health Minister.

The Bougainville Youth in Agriculture initiative continues to play a critical role in promoting sustainable farming practices, strengthening food security, protecting the environment, and creating economic opportunities for young people and communities throughout Bougainville.
